Trains,trains and trains

Highway 30 to Gothenburg parallels the railroad tracks. Trains with 100-200 cars would pass by every 5-10 minutes east or west, I counted one with 114 cars and 7 locomotives in front. If I was not seeing trains, there were plenty of corn fields , 6-7 feet tall, so of course we had sweet corn on the cob with grilled chicken glazed with a&w bbg sauce and boiled red potatoes-no left overs this Saturday night. Camped at a nice koa and doing laundry. Today mileage-88 miles- tommorrow ride 25 into Lexington for church then continue on after for about 50 to make the1000 mark. Gotta get a good rest to get up early so we are not late for church...so...

First impressions of Nebraska

Flat, horizontal, as in not vertical, even the traffic signals are horizontal. Whereas in Colorado we were welcomed with a "Bicycle Friendly" sign, Nebraska welcomes with a "Livestock Friendly" sign. The ride to North Platte has been cool and slighly overcast with a gentle breeze blowing in from the feed yards. On to Gothenberg.

Day 8 Ogallala

Yesterday, entering Nebraska, the wind changed after a swim in Julesberg, Co. The 128 miles day ended with winds, lightning, and rain. Found a room in town and woke up this morning to gray skies and off and on drizzle. Today we have ashort 99 miles planned to Gothenberg, no wind right now, so we need to get going,,,

Day 7 Pioneer Day July 24

Beatiful blue skies this morning. Breakfast was French toast with peach jam or nutella. We went for a jog in Brush, showered, and set off. Flat ride to Sterling for a stop in the great city park across from the RR tracks so I can watch the trains pass - the blast of the horn and the creak and rumble of the freight cars sets the mind to wandering, therfore:

Day 6 part2 Free!!!

Finished the day in Brush, CO, 114 miles, fast down hill for 25, ez downgrade with rollers for 75, finish with 14 flat, all with a tailwind to the FREE campground in Brush, to top that off we have been serenaded with accordian music after the birthday girl broke the piñata. Have also met many other cyclists crossing both ways.

Day 6

Got late start today, had to watch lances time trial, rode an ez 25 downhill to Loveland. Past the bohemian cottage on the way down but it is closed til 5pm - we should have ridden down last night and could have had a good schnitzel

Rocky mountain high

Day 4 July 21. Maybell to Wolford lake 120 miles. Rode up the yampa river valley to steamboat springs. Enjoyed a3000y swim and soak in the mineral hot springs. Then headed up rabbit ears pass 9400 feet a hard climb arrived at wolford at dusk.
Day 5 july 22. Wolford to estes park 100 miles. Feeling good and recovered made up a day by going thru rocky mountain national park at over 12000 feet. Just kept a steady pace all the up. Saw elk grazing near the summit. The descent was the hardest keeping the bike speed under control.
After 2 big mileage days we got a hotel so we don't have unpack and pack up in the morning.
